Report_____
Summary On 26th July 2017, a beach cleaning exercise was held at Melawi Beach coastline. This noble activity was conducted by a group of internship students and the staffs of IOES Bachok Marine Research Station who share the same thoughts of devoting some of our time in order to give something in return to the nature. Through the activity, we collaborated in cleaning the beach from debris and materials that can be harmful to the aquatic life as well as the natural environment. The hand-picked trash was separated into different categories which were recyclable and non-recyclable materials. Some non-recyclable materials retrieved from the beach compound including worn out footwear, plastic caps, polystyrene pieces and fishing nets while the recyclable materials such as aluminium cans, plastic and glass bottles were mostly found.

Forum on Sustainable Mining: Case Study of Bauxite Mining in Pahang

We are happy to announce that the Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), University of Malaya together with the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), will be organising a forum entitled Sustainable Mining: Case Study of Bauxite Mining in Pahang on the 16th of February 2016 at the Auditorium, Institute of Graduate Studies, University of Malaya.

In light of recent events in Kuantan, it is becoming extremely difficult to ignore the existence of unregulated mining of bauxite. The mining activities begun in early 2013, first on a small scale in Balok, but later expanded to other areas like Bukit Goh, Bukit Sagu and Sungai Karang. This sudden surge in bauxite mining in Malaysia commenced following the banning of bauxite exports from Indonesia in January 2014 to encourage its own domestic metal processing industry. This forum will gather scientists, environmentalists and policy makers to exchange information and discuss the process and mechanism of the bauxite mining.

Research teams from Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences, University of Malaya (IOES) and State Key Laboratory in Marine Pollution (SKLMP), City University of Hong Kong jointly conducted a sampling trip on benthic harmful algae blooms (BHAB) from September 29th – 30th Sept 2015. A total of 6 participants with 3 representatives from SKLMP headed by Associate Director of SKLMP, Dr Leo Chan joined the trip.

During the trip, samples from various benthic substrates were collected from different depths ranging from 3-18m around the fringing reefs at Pulau Rawa, Terengganu. SKLMP demonstrated their method of collecting benthic algae using a pump made of PVC connected to a tube with the other end attached to a filter funnel for larger surface area. This method requires one diver operating the pump while another diver locate the desired natural substrate and brush its surface to dislodge attached algae. The pump device consists of sieves acting as a filter system to remove larger unwanted constituents. Teams from IOES showed artificial substrates sampling methods by placing plastic screen adjacent to natural substrates (e.g. corals, seaweed) and screens were retrieved after 24 hours. Sand samples were collected by using centrifuge tube to scoop 3-5 cm from the surface of sand patches underwater. All samples were processed at IOES laboratories after sampling.
