IOES together with Fujian Institute of Oceanography, First Institute of Oceanography, China and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu has successfully organized a training course entitle "2018 Overseas Training Course on China-Malaysia Multidisciplinary Ocean Observation Technology" from 13th to 27th September 2018.

Prof Dr Rofina Yasmin Othman, Associate Vice Chancellor (Industry and Community Network), University of Malaya has officiating the opening ceremony on 13 Sept 2018 with presence of Prof Dr Li Tiegang, Director General, First Institute of Oceanography, China and Ms Ma Zhijie, Executive Deputy Director, Fujian Institute of Oceanography, China.

Exchange and Experience of Chinese Culture activities has been conducted in collaboration with Kongzi Institute, University of Malaya on 14 Sept 2018.

Several lectures has been conducted from 15-18 Sept 2018 which covers

i. Ocean Physical Observation Techniques and Methods
ii. Ocean Microplastics Observation and Analyses
iii. Ocean Geological Observation Techniques and Methods
iv. Ocean Biological Observation Techniques and Methods

On 20-21 Sept 2018, the participants went to Kuala Terengganu for field trip - Visit Terengganu State Museum, Practice - Take Vessel to Collect Samples, Lecture - Comprehensive Observation of Ocean Environment and Lecture - Ocean Dynamical Environment and Sea Surface Meteorological Observation.

On 22-24 Sept 2018, the participants went to Bachok Marine Research Station, IOES, UM to attend lecture and practices:

i. Lecture - Overview of Harmful Algal Bloom Research
ii. Practice - Techniques in Environmental Samples Collection and Preservation; Obtaining Environmental DNA for Metagenomics Analysis; Gene Amplification of Environmental DNA; Metagenomics Data Analysis

Description___

A regional training course (TC) on HAB monitoring and studies for the Southeast Asian members was successfully accomplished from July 8-14, 2018. The TC took place at Bachok Marine Research Station (BMRS), Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), University of Malaya (UM), Kelantan, Malaysia. The training course was jointly organized by SEAFDEC-Marine Fisheries Research Department (MFRD), Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA), IOES, UM and IOC/WESTPAC-HAB (Harmful Algal Bloom) Program. This is part of the continual effort from SEAFDEC/MFRD on capacity building for HABs monitoring and studies in the region. Twenty-one officers attended the course from 10 Southeast Asian countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam. This marked the second TC of a series of training courses by SEAFDEC-MFRD.

The training course was structured around two objectives:
-    Equip relevant fisheries personnel with knowledge required to implement a systematic monitoring program in harmful algal blooms (HABs),
-    Enhance human capital in dealing with HAB monitoring in the Southeast Asian countries.

The 7-days training course was divided into two sessions, of which, first part focused on “Techniques in Culturing and Maintenance of HAB species”, and the second part focused on “Basic Techniques in Molecular Characterization and Detection of HAB Species”.

Summary

The lecturers, staffs, postgraduates’ students and also six internship students from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan Jeli Campus had involved in this beach cleaning programme that were held on 22th March 2018. Associate Professor Dr Lim Po Teen (Head Station), Dr Leaw Chui Pin (Senior Lecturer), and also Dr Hii Kieng Soon (Research Officer) were among the staffs that involved in this activity which were conducted at the Melawi Beach in Kuala Rekang, Bachok. The activity was started at 9 am and end at 11 am in the afternoon.

The Fifth China-Southeast Asian Countries Marine Cooperation Forum was successfully held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on the 16th -17th December 2017. It was organised as an ongoing effort to strengthen the cooperation between China and Southeast Asian countries in the field of marine science and technology. The forum is jointly hosted by the State Oceanic Administration of China (SOA) and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia (MOSTI). This forum is jointly organized between the University of Malaya and the First Institute of Oceanography, China. Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES) was appointed by MOSTI as organiser of this forum. More than 100 delegates from various organizations related to marine affairs of China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines and Brunei Darussalam have participated in the forum. 
In addition, the ceremony for the launching of "First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), SOA and University of Malaya (UM) Joint Centre of Marine Science & Technology" located at Bachok Marine Research Station was also held in this forum.

We are happy to announce that a very successful Joint Committee Malaysia China Maritime Research Workshop was held on 14 Dec 2017 at the HIR (High Impact Research) Auditorium, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur. Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), was appointed by the Ministry of Science, Technology and innovation (MOSTI) to organise this workshop. A total of 65 participants from Malaysia and China attended the workshop. 

The main objectives of the workshop were to: 
1)    To report and evaluate the on-going joint research projects that were approved by the JCM committees.
2)    To discuss and recommend new proposals to the JCM meeting on 15 December 2017. 

A total of 22 presentations on on-going projects were presented while 3 new projects were proposed. 

The projects were evaluated by JCM committee both from Malaysia and China. 
    The workshop was concluded with a closed door meeting among the JCM committees where the outcomes were brought be endorsed by the JCM meeting which was held on 15 Dec 2017 at MOSTI.

Newton Prize 2017

Congratulation to Professor Dr Phang Siew Moi and her team has been awarded the Newton Prize 2017 during the award ceremony on 28 November 2017.

More than 150 projects from India, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam applied for this year's Prize, with a total of 25 outstanding projects being shortlisted and and five Prizes of up to £197,000 or RM 1 million will be awarded to each winner.

Professor Dr Phang Siew Moi, Associate Professor Dr Vengadesh Periasamy, Dr Ng Fong Lee, Mr Muhammad Musoddiq Jaafar (University of Malaya), Dr Adrian Fisher and Dr Kamran Yunus (Cambridge University) with their project entitled Integrating Algal Biophotovoltaics for Bioelectricity Production with Agro-Industrial Wastewater Remediation Using Tropical Algae was the Newton Prize 2017 Winner for Malaysia. The delivery partner for the Newton Prize is the UK National Commission for UNESCO.

Title IOES HICoE Seminar 2017: Air-Ocean-Land Interactions

The IOES would like to thank Professor Dr Noorsaadah Abdul Rahman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation), University of Malaya for officiating the seminar. The IOES HICoE Seminar 2017 was attended by more than 140 participants including representatives from government agencies (Malaysian Meteorological Department, Department of Marine Park Malaysia, Department of Fisheries Malaysia, Maritime Institute of Malaysia), Universities (UM, UKM, UMT, UMK, IIUM), researchers and postgraduate students.

A total of 11 oral presentations and 44 poster presentations were delivered in the IOES HICoE Seminar. Research priorities in Air-Ocean-Land Interactions and future directions for the HICoE programme was discussed during a panel discussion session.

Summary On 26th July 2017, a beach cleaning exercise was held at Melawi Beach coastline. This noble activity was conducted by a group of internship students and the staffs of IOES Bachok Marine Research Station who share the same thoughts of devoting some of our time in order to give something in return to the nature. Through the activity, we collaborated in cleaning the beach from debris and materials that can be harmful to the aquatic life as well as the natural environment. The hand-picked trash was separated into different categories which were recyclable and non-recyclable materials. Some non-recyclable materials retrieved from the beach compound including worn out footwear, plastic caps, polystyrene pieces and fishing nets while the recyclable materials such as aluminium cans, plastic and glass bottles were mostly found.

Forum on Sustainable Mining: Case Study of Bauxite Mining in Pahang

We are happy to announce that the Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), University of Malaya together with the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), will be organising a forum entitled Sustainable Mining: Case Study of Bauxite Mining in Pahang on the 16th of February 2016 at the Auditorium, Institute of Graduate Studies, University of Malaya.

In light of recent events in Kuantan, it is becoming extremely difficult to ignore the existence of unregulated mining of bauxite. The mining activities begun in early 2013, first on a small scale in Balok, but later expanded to other areas like Bukit Goh, Bukit Sagu and Sungai Karang. This sudden surge in bauxite mining in Malaysia commenced following the banning of bauxite exports from Indonesia in January 2014 to encourage its own domestic metal processing industry. This forum will gather scientists, environmentalists and policy makers to exchange information and discuss the process and mechanism of the bauxite mining.

Research teams from Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences, University of Malaya (IOES) and State Key Laboratory in Marine Pollution (SKLMP), City University of Hong Kong jointly conducted a sampling trip on benthic harmful algae blooms (BHAB) from September 29th – 30th Sept 2015. A total of 6 participants with 3 representatives from SKLMP headed by Associate Director of SKLMP, Dr Leo Chan joined the trip. 

During the trip, samples from various benthic substrates were collected from different depths ranging from 3-18m around the fringing reefs at Pulau Rawa, Terengganu. SKLMP demonstrated their method of collecting benthic algae using a pump made of PVC connected to a tube with the other end attached to a filter funnel for larger surface area. This method requires one diver operating the pump while another diver locate the desired natural substrate and brush its surface to dislodge attached algae. The pump device consists of sieves acting as a filter system to remove larger unwanted constituents. Teams from IOES showed artificial substrates sampling methods by placing plastic screen adjacent to natural substrates (e.g. corals, seaweed) and screens were retrieved after 24 hours. Sand samples were collected by using centrifuge tube to scoop 3-5 cm from the surface of sand patches underwater. All samples were processed at IOES laboratories after sampling.

Dr. Hanafi Hussin discusses the significance of rice and other food such as buwas kuning, panyam, and durul in the rituals of the Sama-Bajau communities of Sabah with BFM 89.9. He also compares the functions of rice offerings of the Sama-Bajau with Malay rituals such as main puteri.
