The First Institute of Oceanography (FIO)-University of Malaya (UM) Joint Center for Marine Science and Technology (JCMST) was established on 23 November 2015 as a collaboration between the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), Ministry of Natural Resources, China, and the Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), University of Malaya (UM). The FIO-UM JCMST was officially inaugurated on 16 December 2017 by H.E. Mr. Shanqing Lin, Deputy Administrator of the State Oceanic Administration (SOA), China, and YB Datuk Wira Dr. Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), Malaysia, during the 5th China-Southeast Asian Countries Marine Cooperation Forum, held from 16–17 December 2017 at Connexxion Conference and Event Centre, Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Joint Center is located at the Bachok Marine Research Station of IOES in Kelantan, Malaysia. Since 2014, IOES, UM, and FIO have established a robust research collaboration, actively organizing various activities. These include visiting trips, meetings, forum discussions, conferences, training courses, and joint research projects under the auspices of the FIO-UM JCMST.
Establishing the Joint Center has significantly strengthened the cooperation between Malaysia and China in marine science and technology, contributing to human capacity development and fostering deeper bilateral ties in the field.
