The First Institute Oceanographic (FIO)-University Malaya (UM) Joint Center of Marine Science and Technology (JCMST) was established on 23 November 2015 in collaboration between First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), Ministry of Natural Resources and Institute Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), University of Malaya (UM). The FIO-UM JCMST was officially inaugurated on 16 December 2017 by the H.E Mr Shanqing LIN, Deputy Administrator of SOA, China and YB Datuk Wira Dr Abu Bakar Mohamad Diah, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), Malaysia during the 5th China Southeast Asian Countries Marine Cooperation Forum, 16-17 December 2017 at Connexxion Conference an Event Centre, Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The Joint Center is placed in the Bachok Marine Research Station of IOES, in Kelantan, Malaysia. Since 2014, IOES, UM and FIO, MNR has established a strong research collaboration and actively jointly organized many activities. Numerous activities such as visiting trips, meeting discussion, forum discussion, conferences, training courses and research collaboration projects have been successfully conducted under the FIO-UM JCMST. The establishment of the joint center has strengthened the cooperation between Malaysia and China in marine science and technology and contributes to human capacity building development. 

Major activities of the FIO-UM JCMST include:

  • Planning of the cooperation between FIO, MNR and IOES, UM;
  • Management and coordination of joint projects;
  • Joint application of research funds;
  • Exploration of potential cooperation with other institutions;
  • Arrangement of labs, equipment and research vessels for joints projects;
  • Organization of symposium, training program, and capacity building;
  • Data sharing and exchange of scientific information.
