The Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES)
University of Malaya has its roots in the University
of Malaya Maritime Research Centre (UMMReC) was
established in 2003 in response to the national
call for more concerted research in the marine sciences
considering the importance of Malaysia’s abundant
marine heritage. Since inception, UMMReC has gathered
and organized all relevant research resources and
staff dispersed throughout Universiti Malaya into
a formidable multidisciplinary team which now boasts
of a three-year track record of active and successful
research and consultancy, and cordial networking
with the government and private sectors as well
as eminent scientists abroad.
Having laid a solid foundation, the time has arrived
to take UMMReC to a new level of excellence through
a natural transformation into the Institute of Ocean
and Earth Sciences (IOES).
The institute is comprised of five Research Units:

Living Resources,Biotechnology and Ecosystems
Coastal
Processes Studies and Coastal Engineering
Earth
System Observation & Simulation and Climate Change
