Established in 2008, the Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES) at Universiti Malaya bridges critical gaps between deep academic discovery and scalable climate-resilience policy.
At the Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), we bridge the gap between scientific discovery and impactful environmental solutions. Our research addresses the world’s most urgent oceanic and atmospheric challenges—from climate modeling and blue carbon ecosystems to coastal engineering, marine food security, and international maritime governance.
As a designated Higher Institution Centre of Excellence (HICoE) under the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, we utilize physical coastal observation stations to synthesize localized monsoon and climate teleconnection indices for South East Asia.
We unite natural science, marine biotechnology, environmental social sciences, law, and climate science within a single governance hub to offer actionable insight for regional policy.
Pioneering frontier studies in natural sciences, marine biology, climate teleconnection models, and international ocean/maritime law guidelines.
Nurturing the next generation of global scientific leaders through advanced PhD track qualifications, international workshops, and field courses.
Creating innovative, sustainable tools and biotechnology suites to elevate marine industry standards and real-world environmental protection.
We are dedicated to driving local, regional, and global progress in marine and earth sciences. Our multi-faceted operational strategy delivers a distinct impact across multiple layers.
As the first Malaysian institute to unite ocean and earth sciences under a single vision, we bring together specialized experts in technology, environmental social sciences, and marine biodiversity.
With strategic physical facilities like our premier Bachok Marine Research Station, we directly leverage Malaysia’s diverse, dynamic coastlines for advanced field research and regional marine expeditions.
Our collaborative research directly informs evidence-based national conservation policies, international treaties, and environmental governance frameworks through deep-rooted partner relations.
Since our inception, IOES has consistently expanded Malaysia’s scientific footprint. Click through the timeline nodes below to trace our key historic achievements and international scientific expeditions.
The Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences was formally established at Universiti Malaya to coordinate and lead national research efforts in marine resources, geological geophysics, and coastal weather patterns.
Rather than limiting ourselves to classroom calculations, IOES utilizes strategic operational stations spanning key geographic locations to gather real-time data from physical, natural environments.
Strategically placed on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the Bachok Station acts as the core gateway for South China Sea environmental research. It operates meteorological towers, high-tech chemistry laboratories, and acts as the premier launch pad for atmospheric and marine expeditions.
Continuous air-sea interactive profiling & localized monsoon predictions.

Guided by a steadfast commitment to sustainability and excellence, the Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES) at Universiti Malaya aims to be Asia's leading center for ocean and earth sciences. We continue to champion interdisciplinary research that protects our fragile planet and supports the coastal and global communities that depend on it.
