Perhentian Marine Coral Lab

Location Advantage

Bachok Coastal Reserve

Built on 3 hectares facing the open ocean, BMRS is partially bounded by the Rekang River. This provides researchers immediate access to riverine-marine mixing ecosystems, sandy dune profiles, and nearshore pelagic waters.

Its proximity to the pristine Perhentian Islands (just one hour away) makes it the ideal operations launchpad for studying fragile tropical coral reefs under intense bleaching stress.

Global Standing

Strategic International Alliances

Connecting East-Coast monitoring grids to premier climate programmes and global scientific bodies.

WMO
WMO ACCREDITATION • 13 JUNE 2016

Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) Centre

BMRS's Atmospheric Sciences Centre is recognized as a Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) Centre by the World Meteorological Organization. Backed by a high-altitude observation tower funded by NERC (UK), this center houses a custom micro-Dirac gas chromatograph built in collaboration with Cambridge University to track volatile halocarbon emissions in tropical currents.

EU
EUROPEAN UNION CAMPAIGN

EU-SHIVA Research Programme

Collaborating with over 17 international universities, BMRS acted as a major field campaign anchor to measure halogenated gases and assess their direct depletion impacts on global upper-stratospheric ozone layers.

JOINT CENTRE ACCORD • DECEMBER 2017

UM-FIO Joint Center (JCMST)

Established directly between the University of Malaya and the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), Ministry of Natural Resources, China. JCMST coordinates human capacity building, joint marine expeditions, and bilateral technology sharing.
