RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

  • Northeast Langkawi
    4-10 April 2004

Eighty UMMReC researchers went on two expeditions to the Northest Langkawi (NEL) region to collect data on the unique habitats and natural resources of this oldest geological region of Malaysia. The Integrated Ecosystem Study is used to prepare the Proposal for establishing NEL as a National Park.

  • Scientific Expedition Voyage I
    4-11 June 2004

Thirty-two UMMReC researchers undertook and eighty day live-aboard research voyage on the research vessel Reef Challenger of the Halim Mazmin Group, to survey the habitats, flora, fauna and water quality of the lesser known islands in the northern part of the Straits of Malacca. The expedition uncovered exciting discoveries of new records of flora and fauna on Pulau Jarak and Pulau Perak. Unique coral boulders, the largest in Malaysia, lined the eastern part of Pulau Perak. The only breeding populations of Brown Boobys and Brown Noddys were found in Pulau Perak.

  • Scientific Expedition To The South China Sea
To the Layang-Layang Islands, Terumbu Ubi (Ardasier Reef), with the Navy and the Malaysian Society of Marine Sciences, 2006.
  • Post-Tsunami Impact Surveys, 2005-2006
  • Dugongs In Peril : The Conservation of Endangered Dugongs In Johore
    2005-2006
  • This project is in collaboration with Titan Chemicals Berhad and the UNDP. The research focuses on a study of the endangered dugongs and their habitats in Malaysia, in particular the waters and islands of Johore. Threats to the habitat and other issues related to the survival of the dugong will be identified and used for the formulation of strategic management plans. It is hoped that the recommendations from this study will form the basis for a National Action Plan for Dugongs.
